Key Purpose of the Role:

The Business Manager provides business and governance direction and strategic advice to the Mission & Leadership Presbytery Minister and Committees of the Presbytery. 

Relationships: The Business Manager Relates to: 

  • The Mission & Leadership Presbytery Minister and any other Officers appointed by the Presbytery (specifically the Presbytery Executive) 
  • Officers and Members of Congregations of Presbytery 
  • Uniting Church staff and organisations within the Synod (Property Board, UFS, Uniting and the Secretariat etc.). 
Areas of Responsibility 
Lead Staffing Responsibility for: 
  • Ensuring Congregational reporting compliance to Church and government bodies; 
  • Property Committee: providing effective oversight under its ToR; and 
  • Continuous improvement in our practice of governance.
Within the Lead Responsibility undertake the following detailed roles:
  • Managing the human, financial and property assets of the Presbytery to maximise resources available for the Presbytery’s Mission and Purpose; 
  • Providing advice to the Mission & Leadership Presbytery Minister and Presbytery Standing Committee to enable effective strategic planning; 
  • Working closely with the Presbytery Treasurer to provide monthly financial statements and reporting to the Mission & Leadership Presbytery Minister and Standing Committee; 
  • Assist the Presbytery Treasurer in preparing the Annual Presbytery Budget especially in relation to property income and expenditure; 
  • Working with the Presbytery Treasurer to ensure the annual accounts of the Presbytery are audited; 
  • Provide assistance to the PRC in relation to Life and Witness Consultations undertaken within Presbytery to ensure strategic missional use of finance, property and appropriate maintenance of assets by Congregations; 
  • Being a member of the Presbytery’s Property Committee and providing oversight and advice to the committee to ensure efficient management of property and financial assets throughout the Presbytery; 
  • Providing financial and business advice on development projects within Presbytery including developing business plans and assessing financial viability of projects; 
  • Providing similar services to those listed above, with respect to particular Congregations as required and at the discretion of the Mission & Leadership Presbytery Minister, from time to time; 
  • Ensuring the compliance of the Presbytery and its Congregations with statutory requirements and church regulatory and reporting requirements including managing the funds of the Presbytery in accordance with any policies set by the Synod of NSW & the ACT By-Laws and in accordance with Uniting Church in Australia Constitution and Regulations; 
  • Developing procedures for Presbytery staff and Congregations with respect to financial management and workplace health and safety, and introducing appropriate controls to identify and reduce risk of financial loss and workplace injury; 
  • Assist with establishment of an innovative IT including website and off-site cloud backup; 
  • Any other matter as directed by Presbytery Mission & Leadership Minister; 
  • Attendance at meetings outside of business hours as required. 

 Essential Capacities:
The key capacities that are required in this position are: 
Role Specific: 

  • A general knowledge of the Uniting Church in Australia; 
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in business or accounting plus 5-10 years minimum business management experience; 
  • Ability to lead and innovate strategic change to shore up Presbytery funding; 
  • Ability to prioritise and have oversight over the varied ministries and businesses within Presbytery’s responsibility; 
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills; 
  • Sound level of computer literacy including ability to use financial accounting software, offsite cloud based shared data systemsand ability to use Excel at an advanced level; 
  • Strong team player and a commitment to innovative and collaborative working approaches; 
  • Problem solving attitude and a commitment to generate workable solutions; and 
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation and liaison skills. 
Person Specific: 
  • Maturity in personality and Christian faith with a clear set of values consistent with the Uniting Church as expressed in the Basis of Union; 
  • An explicit sense of hope for the future of the Church; 
  • Experience in and understanding of working across cultures; 
  • A willingness to work within the ethos of the Uniting Church; 
  • Hold a current motorcar driver’s license.
