Are you called to serve the homeless?

About Us
Servants Community Housing Inc (Servants) is a not for profit organization operating in the suburbs of Hawthorn and Kew, Victoria. Emerging from Hawthorn West Baptist Church in 1986, Servants enjoys charitable status and has a proud history of providing outstanding long-term community housing to people on low-incomes who are at risk of homelessness.  Servants houses 95 people across four properties: three large mixed properties and one small female-only property.  It is recognized by the Housing Registrar of Victoria as a Registered Housing Provider and its reputation within the housing sector and the City of Boroondara is exemplary.

Most people who are housed by Servants have encountered significant difficulties in their lives.  Many have struggled, and continue to struggle, with significant mental health difficulties. Ninety five percent of residents claim a Federal Government social security payment.

Servants is based on the principles that housing people well is fundamentally important, and that people do better when they live in functional, safe communities.  The Church’s strong tradition of caring for people in community has shaped Servants’ unique model of housing.  A live-in, on-site House Manager is a central feature of the Servants model, although residents are required to be capable of independent living.  Residents each have their own small room and share communal facilities, with communal breakfast and an evening meal provided by part time cooks.  Residents pay a fee which covers all expenses, including food and utilities.

About the role
Servants has an urgent need for people who are willing to be House Managers and live in our two bedroom flat.   The role involves managing the day to day operations of a property housing 38 single people. Previously the role has worked well for couples transitioning to retirement but also for couples with young children.   Managers do not have to be on site 24/7, however they do need the flexibility to be present to liaise with case workers and maintenance contractors, and accept deliveries (amongst other things!).  The position is paid approximately 20 hours per week, along with living on-site free of charge with utility expenses covered.

Essential Criteria
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Wisdom
  • Be self-motivated and able to work autonomously and independently
  • Be caring and compassionate, interested in people and community
  • Computer skills
  • Problem solving skills and conflict resolution ability
Closing date
Expressions of Interest should be submitted by 26th August.
The people who work for Servants do not see their roles simply as a job – more as a vocation. For further informatio about Servants, visit our website at www.servants.org.au
